as i wrote last week, i am deeply saddened by the passing of amy winehouse. i decided to paint a "serious" portrait of her as a tribute to her and how i felt about her. i didn't want to touch on her substance abuse or her turbulent personal life, i just wanted to paint the beautiful girl that got caught in the undertow of fame. the jokes about amy aren't funny anymore, and i felt like i owed it to her to move away from making her in to a caricature. i think the picture i took above doesn't capture all of the textures of the painting, so here's an awkward close up:

if i believed in a god or heaven, i would hope that she was somewhere better. all i can say is that i hope in her last days and moments, she was happy and felt loved and content. this will not be the last work i do inspired by amy, her inspiration to me aesthetically will go on for as long as i make art.

amy winehouse was my muse. say what you will about her eccentricities and rampant drug use, miss winehouse was a force of nature. i was instantly attracted to her- her raspy voice, tattoos, beehive hairdoo that seemed larger than she was, her throwback style. back to black is one of my top five favorite albums. aside from her immense talent, amy was always a source of inspiration to me. the girl was fun to draw. she had the most expressive face. i loved her even when she was crazy drunk, wandering the streets in a bra and shorts. i loved her when she was sober and at her best. it's such a shame she never got it together. i always hoped she would pull through and meet her full potential. i hate that she has been made a joke of since her debut, and now will be a joke after her death.

i started making these little felt dolls because i want to do more 3D work (since i don't do anything but draw anymore). their names are felts plamo (the one that looks like me) and jaynee feltt (for a friend of mine). they take a few hours to make which is an adjustment for me since i work so fast on illustrations, but i plan on doing more of these cuties.

well, 2010 has come to an end. this has not been a good for my personal life. but it has been an awesome year for my artistic life. not only have i completed a ton of work and filled up at least 7 sketchbooks, i had a show at BYO studios, got my amazing internship with urban bird/eco.batik, did way more freelance than i have done in years, got written about in the shepherd express, and soon i will be featured on mental floss's links. hopefully 2011 will be even more productive. thanks to everyone who reads this blog, buys my work, and supports me. i couldn't do it without you. now, here's some of my favorites from the past year:
